I have another Top 5 post, but this one is mostly about the books I want to read. Most of these are books that I was excited about but putting it off and then got distracted.

The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid- This fantasy is steeped in Hungarian history and Jewish mythology. Evike is the only one in her village that doesn’t have any magic. She is shocked when she is given to the huntsman under the guise of being the girl the huntsman is after and surrendered. As she travels through the forest with her captors, monsters attack and kill off the entire part except for her and the one- eyed captain. Now they must rely on each other to survive.

Red Wolf by Rachel Vincent- This is a little red riding hood retelling. The people of Oakvale know to stay clear of the dark woods that surrounds the village as it is filled with monsters. But Adele is one of the guardians – women who turn into wolves to protect their village. Now she has to choose between keeping her neighbors safe and the person she loves and the life that she imagined she’d live.

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten- The first daughter is for the throne an the second is for the wolf. Red is the only Second Daughter to be born in centuries and is raised to be a sacrifice for the wolf of the wood, in the hopes that he will return the world’s captured gods. The dangerous power that Red has makes her almost willing to go, as it will keep those she loves safe. But the legends are a lie and Red’s magic is a calling not a curse.

The Frozen Prince by Maxym M. Martineau- This is the second in the Beast Charmer trilogy and to be honest I am not 100% sure if this counts. The assassins of Crour’s headquarters/ home is in the woods, but I doubt that the entire book takes place there. But I am counting it because I can. And I think this is a series that people should definitely check out.

Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray – Koffi is a 16 year old girl who is an indentured servant. Ekon has been training to become a Son of the Six -an elite warrior. In an attempt to protect her loved ones, Koffi unleashes a power she never knew she had. The Shetani, a vicious monster, changes both of their lives. Koffi and Ekon decide to work together to find the Shetani, though they have very different goals in mind; one wants to kill it and one wants to capture it. They go into the Greater Jungle with wild magic and unknown dangers.

Bonus:

Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega– Every year during the Black Moon Ceremony witchlings are sorted in the various covens, and come into their powers as full fledge witches. Seven is excited and looking forward to being in the town’s most powerful coven with her best friend. Instead she is a spare along with two other girls. When their circle remains open, Seven invokes the impossible task as a last ditch effort to seal their circle and keep their magic. I am currently listening to this and it is sooo good. This is Ortega’s sophomore novel and she is definitely an author to watch.

I am always looking for recommendations so if there are any forest fantasies that I definitely need to pick up, please leave a comment. By the way there are two read alongs happening during Wyrd & Wonder : The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black and The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay . These are both forest fantasies!!!

Always Shine,
